Remember when your children were first learning to walk? Thing 2 decided to walk the day he turned twelve-months-old. He took two steps, then crashed onto the floor. Scooping him up, I clapped and cheered him on and off he went again. This time, three steps before the crash. It went on like that until he finally made it across the room. Not to be outdone, Thing 1 saw what was happening, and literally within hours, he went from never crawling to walking. Unbelievable determination created by competition!

As babies, we all fell on our faces and got up and tried again. But the older we get, the harder it is to TRY AGAIN. Or as the pirates say, to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps! Most of us can recall the team we tried out for, but didn’t make, or the job we interviewed for, but didn’t get.

Rejection hurts, but sometimes rejection is protection.

Rejection has taught me some valuable lessons. I’ve learned that there is often something better for me, waiting right around the corner. I’ve learned to wait for the right thing. And I’ve learned to TRY AGAIN.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 recently tried out for a team that neither of them made. Although disappointed, Thing 2 impressed me with his wisdom. “That’s okay, mom. There will always be a next time.”

Everyone fails at some point, it’s a normal part of life. But giving up is true failure. What is it you’re struggling with right now? Are you thinking of quitting? If you receive a no, don’t stop there. No is just a step in the wrong direction. Make a U-turn and TRY AGAIN.

As the old rhyme says, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”.
