When I was little, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” special came on TV once a year. Poor Charlie felt sorry for himself because he couldn’t get anything right. When he asked if anyone knew what Christmas was all about, Linus spoke up, reciting the story of Jesus’ birth from Luke 2. Then, Linus concludes with this famous line. “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” With all the difficulties of 2020, it’s easy to forget Christmas is about offering hope to others. When I heard this story, I was once again reminded of the real meaning of Christmas.

When the Horton’s were told their unborn daughter would not survive, they immediately began to pray. They gave their daughter a special name with a extraordinary meaning—Lucy Jane— meaning light and God is gracious. Their prayer was that LJ would be a light to others and that God would be gracious and save this baby.

LJ is now a beautiful and energetic nine-year-old whose smile fills the room. She loves to draw and play outside on the playset her dad built. But LJ’s favorite hobby is crafting. After seeing a bracelet with word beads, LJ thought it would be cool if the words offered encouragement to those who bought her bracelets.

“Since Covid, I thought we all needed encouragement. I thought I could encourage others with fun phrases.” —LJ

LJ and her parents created Become the Glow whose mission is to illuminate positivity into the world. LJ’s bracelets contain messages like “Be Kind”, “Have Faith”, and “Love Others”. She tells each customer to let that phrase become your glow and share it with friends. Her hope is that her bracelets will become a movement of positivity. When I asked LJ what made her bracelets different, she said “They have encouraging phrases that you can share with other people.” Since starting Become the Glow in October 2020, LJ has sold over 225 bracelets!

When LJ talks, her face lights up. Her smile and her desire to help others is contagious! The message of Be Positive, Find Peace, and Be Joyful etched in each bracelet serve as a reminder of what Christmas is all about. LJ lives up to her name. She has become a light to others, illuminating a dark time in people’s lives. And the Horton’s know that God was truly gracious in giving them this extraordinary little girl.

We can all Become the Glow by simply spreading encouragement and positivity to others. May this Christmas season bring you peace, love, and hope.
